Dr. J.E. Self was born in Jasper, Alabama in 1866 and came to De Leon in 1896.  In the early days his primary transportation to see his patients was in a buggy but his wife Alice was said by family members to have had a scurry “with the fringe on top.”  He hired Sam Bennett to tend the horses and hitch up the buggies.

Dr. Self served for a number of years as the doctor for the Bearcat football team.  His wife taught Sunday School at “the little Baptist Church” which probably was the building located on the southwest corner of  Texas and Reynosa prior to 1908.

The Self Children include:  Eva, Effie (Rollins), Alpha, Urselle (Lee) and Autry.

The Self home, later the home of their daughter Mrs. George Rollins, is located on the southwest corner of Labadie and Austin. This old De Leon home was saved by the De Leon Fire Department on December 29, 1947 when an electrical fire in the attic was extinguished before it spread throughout the house.
