Van Dyke is a community about nine miles south of De Leon along Duncan Creek on the east side of Texas Hwy. 16 (CR 411 and 410A). It was named for N. Van Dyke Frost, apparently a relative of noted Texas banker Thomas C. Frost as Van Dyke inherited 113 acres originally granted to Thomas Frost.
Van Dyke Frost initially gave land for the school in 1870 out of the land inherited from Tom Frost and an additional 2.5 acres was donated in 1911 by N.V. Frost (assumed to be N. Van Dyke Frost or his descendant).
